Do you conduct regular performance reviews and check-ins with your employees?
As the end of the financial year approaches, small business owners have a valuable opportunity to review the performance of their team. With fewer layers of management and closer working relationships, small businesses are well-placed to create meaningful, personalised performance conversations that drive both individual and business growth.
Effective performance review in a small business context doesn’t require complex systems. What matters most is consistency, fairness and clear communication. Taking time to reflect on how team members have contributed to the business helps identify both strengths and areas for development. These discussions should be forward-looking, focused not just on what has been achieved but also on how goals and responsibilities might evolve in the new financial year.
In a small team, recognition carries significant weight. Acknowledging contributions, whether through informal praise or clear links to rewards and opportunities, helps foster loyalty and motivation. At the same time, addressing performance issues early and constructively is essential to maintaining trust and momentum.
It’s important to have these conversations regularly. At PPS, we check in with all our staff on a quarterly basis. To get maximum return on investment, performance review should not be an annual “set and forget” box ticking exercise.
What could I do?
- Set aside time in the coming weeks to meet individually with each team member.
- Use these conversations to provide feedback, discuss future goals and invite input on how they can be better supported in the year ahead.
- Ensure you keep records of these conversations to assist in future years and to reduce the risk of misunderstandings or misaligned expectations.
