National Recruitment Search for Director NECOM

National search successfully attracts outstanding musician and music educator, Russell Bauer to head up the New England Conservatorium of Music

Originally from rural Queensland, Russell leaves his 6-year role as the Head of Performance Music at Sheldon College in Brisbane to join NECOM. Russell has been one of 15 Australian finalists in the National Excellence in Teaching Awards. Russell has been a lecturer in Music at the University of Southern Queensland, a Director of Music at two independent schools, and an instrumental music instructor for many years.

Russell is an internationally-published composer of Concert Band music, was the winner of the first national Australian Memory Championships and holds the Australian record for the most hours playing piano (37 hours), a feat which included playing from a repertoire of over 800 memorised pieces. He is also a published author of music teaching texts, which offer an exciting and innovative approach for children striving to learn an instrument.

Pinnacle People Solutions conducted a national search to identify outstanding candidates to head up the Armidale-based New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM). Not only was the recruitment search conducted in an unusually tight timeframe, but the calibre of candidate that was sought was unlikely to already be in the recruitment market.

Taking a national approach, using digital media to create awareness, and by tapping key candidates on the shoulder, Pinnacle People Solutions was able identify high performing candidates. Pinnacle facilitated the selection and interview process, and will take a key role in ‘settling’ the candidate and their family into Armidale. A key criterion in finding a candidate for regionally-based business is attracting candidates more likely to settle well into a regional community.

On the appointment, Greg Moin, Chair of NECOM said, Russell impressed me as a person who has a genuine love and passion for music and music education. He understands regional communities and struck me as a person who is genuine, honest and hardworking who will bring drive and enthusiasm to the role of Director.

He went on to say, I want to acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that Bronwyn Pearson and her team at Pinnacle People Solutions undertook in this process, that resulted in us not only ensuring we attracted a pool of high calibre candidates to interview, but in successfully filling the position.

Director and Principal Consultant, Bronwyn Pearson, said attracting high calibre candidates to regional locations can be challenging, however by thoroughly identifying both the professional and lifestyle opportunities associated with the role, combined with focussing on attracting only the best quality candidates who are also ‘sold’ on the regional location, you can significantly improve your recruitment success.
